Language and Learning Support

ESL/International

Learning Advisers work with International students and support students from non-English speaking backgrounds (NESB).

If you are a student from a non-English speaking background, you are encouraged to check out any relevant workshops being offered.

This guide provides some valuable hints on how to successfully edit your own writing. The guide includes common error codes used by editors and examples of common errors and their corrections.

This site contains 170 interactive quizzes that not only mark your answers but also explain the reason behind the answer. The quizzes cover areas such as spelling, grammar, clauses, phrases, punctuation, pronoun use and structural flaws. There are accompanying units and notes for each quiz.

The Good Grammar, Good Style Archive has more than 100 pages of useful articles and frequently asked questions about style, grammar, or mechanics! Topics include subjunctives, the serial comma, subject-verb agreement, the who-whom distinction, and when it is all right to be passive.

The EduFind Online Test Centre is a site where you can work through fully interactive tests and educational games to improve your skills. There is no charge but you do have to register to use this resource and your browser must accept cookies and have Flash Player installed. Once you are registered you can also keep track of your test scores over time. While the test itself is free, it is part of a commercial site so there are some optional extras that require payment.
