WebCam Installation
These days some computers come with an inbuilt web camera. This guide takes you through the set-up for an external webcam, whatever the brand. Webcams are cheap (from $49 to expensive!) and very useful if you want to communicate with your colleagues and classmates at a distance. Webcams, if used with a web conferencing tool like Skype, (see box below this) can replace the face-to-face interactions that students miss when studying online. Both teacher and student need a webcam - whether external or inbuilt - and a conferencing tool (like Skype) to communicate. Note, the process on a Mac is similar and a movie will later be available for the Mac.
If you have an inbuilt webcam in your computer you will not need to install an external webcam. But you will still need a conferencing tool - so read about Skype, below.

Skype Set up Guide
Now you have a webcam, you need a program to 'web conference' with a fellow student. This guide steps you through setting up one conferencing tool, Skype, on a PC. The process on a Mac is similar and a movie will later be available for the Mac. Free and easy to use, Skype is a good first step to better communication with your teacher and others.
Before you begin this tutorial, first download Skype for either Mac or Windows here.

WIKI GUIDES: Acknowledgement:
The following Wiki Guides were written by Learning Objects, the company that developed our terrific Wiki, Blog, Podcast, Expo and Search tools. We have the developer's permission to revise these guides progressively for our LearnJCU environment, but until they are revised you will notice a lack of screen shots, and the use of words such as Course instead of Subject, etc. We appreciate your patience and hope the guides will suffice for now.
