Statement: Use lots of pretty pictures to brighten up your essay. Presentation is everything.
You already know that everything in the essay should be helping to answer the question!
Illustrations (photos, drawings, maps, tables etc) can be very useful, but make sure they really are illustrations. In other words, they should help to explain something in the text of your essay. Give all illustrations a title, a figure number so you can refer to them in your essay, and a reference if you didn't draw them yourself.
Presentation should help to improve clarity, not looks.
Don't forget that all kinds of useful information such as tables can be put in appendices. Again, give them a title (eg. Appendix A: Production figures for 1997-1999) and put them between the essay and the reference list / bibliography.
