Clive Hutchison, from James Cook University’s School of Creative Art has been awarded with the Vice Chancellor’s Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning for 2008.
Mr Hutchison was selected from a group of seventeen candidates from each of the four faculties.
The award recognises Mr Hutchison’s efforts to engage his students through innovative teaching practices. His teaching philosophy is based on building students’ self-confidence and inspiring them to learn, be adaptable and achieve.
Mr Hutchison is a former professional photographer who joined JCU almost ten years ago. Central to his teaching practice is a commitment to student-centred, industry relevant learning and channelling the experiences of graduate students back to the undergraduate program.
“The search for new ways to design and deliver relevant and inspirational programs that empower students as independent lifelong learners is ongoing,” Mr Hutchison said.
Mr Hutchison places an emphasis on interdisciplinary and collaborative activities by students and staff to reflect the contemporary creative arts workplace. He incorporates technology in his classes that give students flexible learning options including the production of online video podcasts.
Professor Ryan Daniel, Head of School of Creative Arts, said this insistence on incorporating real-world experiences into the students’ learning was the strength of Mr Hutchinson’s teaching profile.
“Students are inspired by Clive’s passion for digital imaging and his ability to connect their learning with industry,” Professor Daniel said.
Mr Hutchison’s application along with nine other applications from JCU will now be judged for a 2008 Carrick Institute Awards for Teaching Excellence.
Issued: May 9, 2008.
