Seeking a slice of China’s economic cake

A senior executive of one of China’s largest private businesses will speak about the opportunities and risks of getting involved in China’s rapidly growing economy at a special luncheon in Townsville next week.

Part of the 20th Annual Conference of the Association for Chinese Economic Studies Australia (ACESA), the luncheon will be held at Jupiters Hotel on Thursday, July 10.

Mr Fu Wenge, Vice President of the Hope Group, will be speaking on: “Sharing the cake: Is there a slice for me? Opportunities and risks in the fast-growing Chinese market.”

The Hope Group has been built by four brothers in China beginning in 1982 as a family business concern breeding quails and chickens. Since then it has diversified into animal feed, real estate, electronics, banking and insurance and is one of China’s largest private businesses.

The two-day conference has been organised by ACESA, James Cook University’s Centre for AusAsia Business Studies, the College of Economics and Management of China Agricultural University, and the China and World Economy journal of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

The business lunch has been organised by the Centre and Townsville Chamber of Commerce.

JCU’s Associate Professor Zhangyue Zhou from the University’s School of Business said that in the past three decades China’s economy had been turned around from being on the brink of collapse to one of the major world economies.

“China’s experience of economic growth provides a wealth of issues for academics, government policy makers and business personnel,” he said.

Associate Professor Zhou, who is the Director of JCU’s Centre for AusAsia Business Studies, said the conference had the theme of “30 Years of Economic Reforms in China: Retrospect and Outlook”.

“It is very opportune and appropriate to hold an international conference to review, evaluate and look at the future of China’s economy 30 years after those reforms began in 1978,” he said. “It is particularly pleasing that ACESA has chosen Townsville to hold its 20th annual conference on such an important topic.”

Associate Professor Zhou said that delegates at the conference will discuss diverse issues such as China’s demand for natural resources and agrifood demand, which will be of great relevance to North Queensland.
