Microbiology and Immunology

Microbiology is the study of the microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses and parasites, that share this planet with us. Many of these microbes are agents of disease, are useful in biotechnology, help to keep the planet habitable and are used in food processes. Microbiologists at this University are interested in the interactions between microbes and other organisms such as humans, animals and plants.

Immunology involves the study of the immune system. Immunologists are interested in the mechanisms used by humans and animals to maintain a healthy existence and protect themselves from infectious disease and cancer. Altered immune processes are thought to be associated with diseases such as asthma, thyroid imbalances, diabetes mellitus and rheumatoid arthritis. Developments in immunology are intimately connected with improvements in lifestyle and life expectancy.

New graduates can expect to find career opportunities in food and beverage manufacture, the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, agricultural and forestry industries, medical or veterinary research institutes.
