On January 14, Air Niugini Chairman, Sir Frederick Reiher, officially announced that Air Niugini will operate direct flights between Townsville and Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

The biweekly flight service is anticipated to commence by March 2017.

During the Chairman's announcement he acknowledged the efforts of the Townsville Airport, Townsville City Council and Townsville Enterprise, and how impressed he has been with the support shown by the Townsville business community towards the establishment of this service.

Opening up this flight route presents significant trade and investment opportunities for the Townsville North Queensland region.

It will also provide ongoing economic benefits to the region’s tourism sector through increased visitation and interest in the destination.

Townsville Enterprise chairs the Aviation Attraction Committee that has been working with the Townsville Airport, Townsville City Council and other key stakeholders to identify and target new international routes, such as Papua New Guinea.

The next priority is increasing connectivity for domestic routes such as Sydney and Melbourne, followed by Singapore and Auckland in the medium term. A trade delegation in 2017 is being considered to visit these destinations.

This has been a strategic vision worked on over the course of the last 12 months and is a great achievement for Townsville North Queensland.
