The Gold Medal winning performances at the Rio Olympics will inspire James Cook University’s best runners when they tackle the annual Cairns Campus K on Friday, August 19.

Organised by the Student Association and the Nikki P run club, the one-kilometre race is a regular feature of the academic year, with trophies awarded for the fastest male and female students, the fastest male and female staff members and the best-dressed team.

This year staff students and staff can compare their speed to Usain Bolt's record 44.64km/h in the inaugural Campus K 100m dash.

Head of JCU’s Cairns campus Professor Robyn McGuiggan said the hotly contested event had become popular with both serious runners and those vying for the best dressed team.

The 2015 winners were:

  • Male student Fraser Lyon, 1st year dentistry
  • Female student Nicole Perry, 2nd year dentistry
  • Male staff member Jon Tindall, Tropical Environments & Societies
  • Female staff member Lindsay Welch, Sport & Exercise Science
  • Best dressed The Tropical Team (from Future Students)

The 2016 Campus K race begins at midday on Founders Green, between buildings A1 and A3.

Registrations are from 11.30am and there will be a free barbecue during the event.

Trophy presentations will be Immediately after the race.
