Invitation to participate in a research study on university student engagement

You are invited to take part in a research project exploring meaningful student engagement through teaching academics’ nuanced practices in university environments.

Donna Goldie, of James Cook University, is conducting the research as part of a PhD study.

Project Summary:

Contemporary monitoring of university student engagement is criticised for over focusing inequitably on the intersecting components of student cognition, behaviour and emotion. This fails to adequately acknowledge the multifaceted nature of student engagement. Existing quantitative measures silence the teaching academics who enact the learning experience. This insider researcher investigation employs a constructivist paradigm, qualitative case study approach to explore ten teaching academics’, nuanced understandings of their practice, actions and agency, in relation to promoting student engagement at one university in North Queensland, Australia. Findings will expand the current repertoire of research literature on university student engagement by giving voice to the particular insights of these academics.

Donna Goldie, of James Cook University, is conducting the research as part of a PhD study.

If you agree to be involved in the study, you will be invited to participate in the research in two ways.  1) You may share your experiences through your participation in an interview (approximately 30 minutes). 2) You may also participate in a series of four focus groups – one per month for four months – (approximately thirty minutes).

In order to participate in the study, you are required to be employed in a teaching role – e.g., full-time, part-time, casual, sessional, adjunct – at James Cook University, Townsville Campus.

Taking part in this study is completely voluntary and you can stop taking part in the study at any time without explanation or prejudice.

All data collected for this study will be confidential. You will not be required to identify yourself or your College/Division.

The data from the study will be used in a PhD thesis, research publications and conference presentations.

If you know of other teaching academics that may be interested in this study, please pass on this information so they have the opportunity to volunteer for this research.
