It’s been another massive year of sport at JCU Sport in 2016 as our programs again went from strength to strength.

Our annual sports awards capped of the year in style last Friday.

Taking home the major individual awards for sportswoman and man of the year were Saints College’s Phoebe Shirlow and St Marks College’s Francis Witt, respectively.

Our 2016 Spirit of Sport Award went to Brad Roberts, whose passion for Interfaculty sport is second to none.

The 2016 Fisher Shield (inter-college comp) was again closely contested, the overall women’s champions were Saints college, while for the men University Hall came out on top.

The 2016 Fisher Shield champions, for the first time ever were a very deserving John Flynn college. They improved out of sight in 2016 to take home the major prize, along with being named the Spirit Award champions.

Rehab and Exercise Science were again the winners of the overall Interfaculty Championship for 2016, which makes it five in a row. Congratulations to all of our winners for 2016!

The Australian Uni Games in Perth was again one of the highlights on the JCU Sport calendar this year. Although we took a smaller team than in previous years we had some strong results. Both of our athletics athletes smashed their personal best results for their sports, with our 2016 Elite Athlete Scholarship holder Alex Ypinzar placing second overall in triple jump. Our Rugby Union women’s 7’s team also had a great competition, finishing second overall. Phoebe Shirlow and Lydia Ogden were outstanding throughout the competition, and went onto make the green and gold team; they will now go on to represent Australia at the world university games 7’s championship. A massive achievement for both girls, we are super proud of them!

Keep an eye out next year for the social sport sign-on in February, and all of our programs starting up again in March.
