Submission from JCU PhD student Danielle Asson, organiser March for Science (Townsville):
Some of you may be aware of the global March for Science movement, triggered by events in the United States, but relevant worldwide.
A number of us here at JCU have decided to host a satellite march here in Townsville, in support of science, and to call for changes in how science is presented to, and perceived by, the public and within the government, how it is used in government decisions and policy-making, and how it is prioritised.
Currently we are seeking support from interested parties who might like to attend the march (which will be a stationary rally), or participate as a speaker or sponsor. The rally will take place April 22nd (Saturday) from 11-3 at Strand Park.
As organisers, we are hoping this triggers long-term change; we do not plan for this to be a singular event that fades into memory once it is over.
