ALA workshop

The Centre has experienced and committed educators and researchers with both passion and experience in nursing, midwifery and public health in the Pacific. The Centre consists of JCU staff members and principal professionals from across Australia and the Western Pacific.

Professor Caryn West

Centre Director

Professor Caryn West is the Academic Head of Nursing and Midwifery for JCU Australia and Dean of Research for JCU Singapore. Professor West maintains a strong international reputation having worked extensively with the World Health Organisation and Asia Pacific and Western Pacific countries.

Dr Karen Yates

Deputy Director

Dr Karen Yates is a registered nurse and registered midwife, with a strong interest and background in midwifery clinical care, education and maternity service provision. Dr Yates has worked in both private and public clinical settings and in both regional and rural facilities.

Andrea Grimes

Manager

Ms Grimes is a registered nurse who has worked in varied hospital settings. She has a Masters of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and a post graduate certificate in Nursing Education. She has a keen interest in a broader aspect of health including the public health related to disaster situations and infectious diseases outbreaks.

Vanessa Sparke

Member

Vanessa is an experienced Infection Prevention and Control (IP&C) professional with an interest in rural and remote areas. She is undertaking her PhD in improving infection prevention and control in a Solomon Island rural hospital.

Associate Professor David Lindsay

Member

David’s research interests include the prevalence within, and impact upon, the health workforce of chronic diseases, rural health and rural nursing. David is currently working with Kiribas and Fiji on growing the nursing profession.
