Far North Queensland is a stunning region and Australia’s closest and easiest access point to the Great Barrier Reef. It is the only place on earth where two World Heritage listed areas meet, the iconic Great Barrier Reef and Australia’s Wet Tropics rainforests. The region offers more than 300 days of sunshine per year, as well as plenty of space and friendly locals.

Getting around Cairns

Personal or rental car

Cairns boasts many car rental companies and most operate out of the Cairns airport, as well as from the Cairns CBD. Terms and conditions apply and vary between operators. Local roads are well signed for visitors and tourists.

The conference venue operates an undercover car park from 7am-7pm Monday to Friday at a cost of $5.00 per exit. See the Cairns Convention Centre website for further information.

Taxi or private transfer

For taxis, contact Cairns Taxis by phoning 131 008, booking online, or downloading their smartphone app. Uber also operates in Cairns, offering an alternative to taxis.

Also available are private transfer companies, which must be booked well in advance.

Sunbus Cairns operates scheduled and charter services to and from the conference venue. Visit the Sunbus website for journey planners, routes, timetables and fares. Note, many businesses and services will be affected by the Cairns Show public holiday on Friday 20 July 2018. Please check service times.

Ride or walk

The Cairns CBD is easily navigated by bicycle or on foot. Several bicycle hire companies operate in the city. If hiring a bicycle, you will be responsible for its safe and secure storage. In Queensland it is a requirement by law to wear an Australian Standard approved bicycle helmet when riding. Road rules also apply.

The conference venue is a 5-15 minute walk from most hotels in the CBD, and there are plenty of caf├ęs, restaurants, shops and other sights to see along the way.

See the Cairns Regional Council's cycling and walking guide for further tips and advice.
