About This Scholarship
The James Cook University–China Scholarship Council (JCU–CSC) PhD Scholarship is a prestigious collaborative program between James Cook University and the China Scholarship Council, enabling exceptional Chinese graduate students to undertake a full Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree at JCU in Australia.
JCU is renowned globally for its research in tropical ecology, marine biology, reef science, public health, and environmental sustainability — disciplines uniquely suited to the ecosystems of northern Australia and the Indo-Pacific region. JCU alumni and researchers have shaped global policy on coral reef conservation, tropical disease, and climate adaptation.
Under this arrangement, JCU provides a full tuition fee waiver while the China Scholarship Council provides a living allowance and return airfare, making this one of the most comprehensive funding packages available to Chinese doctoral candidates.

How to Apply
Express Interest to CSC via Your Home Institution
Contact your home institution's international office and indicate your interest in the CSC–JCU program. CSC selects and nominates candidates in the second half of each calendar year for the following year's intake. Your home institution must endorse and recommend your application to CSC.
Receive CSC Nomination
If selected by CSC, you will receive formal nomination for the program. This nomination does not guarantee a JCU place — you must still complete the JCU application process independently and secure an offer from JCU.
Identify a JCU Supervisor
Browse JCU's research profiles and identify an academic supervisor whose work aligns with your research interests. Contact them directly with your CV, academic transcripts, and a brief research proposal outline. Supervisor agreement is essential before submitting your formal application.
Apply for JCU PhD Admission
Submit a formal application for PhD admission through JCU's Graduate Research School. You will need to provide academic transcripts, evidence of English proficiency, a research proposal, CV, and two academic reference letters. Indicate in your application that you are applying for the JCU–CSC Scholarship.
Receive JCU Offer & CSC Finalisation
Once your PhD application is assessed and approved, JCU's Graduate Research School will issue a Letter of Offer. JCU provides CSC with a confirmed list of accepted candidates. CSC then finalises the scholarship recipients and notifies successful candidates directly.
Visa Application & Commencement
Once notified by CSC, apply for your Australian student visa (subclass 500). JCU's International Student Services team will assist with your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). JCU's Graduate Research School provides orientation, induction, and ongoing support throughout your degree.
Required Documents
Prepare the following documents for both your JCU application and CSC application. Early preparation is strongly recommended.
- Certified copies of academic transcripts (undergraduate and postgraduate, with English translation if applicable)
- Research proposal (approximately 2,000–3,000 words) outlining your proposed PhD project
- Evidence of English language proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL, or institutional exemption)
- Curriculum Vitae / résumé including publications, presentations, and research experience
- Two academic reference letters from supervisors or senior researchers
- Letter of support from prospective JCU supervisor
- Copy of passport (biographical page)
- CSC application form (completed via csc.edu.cn portal)
- JCU Conditional Letter of Offer (issued after JCU admission review)
Duration and Renewal
The JCU–CSC PhD Scholarship is awarded for an initial period of three years (36 months), in line with the standard CSC scholarship duration for PhD candidates. This may be extended to a maximum of four years (48 months) with the approval of both JCU and CSC, subject to satisfactory academic progress.
Scholars are expected to maintain satisfactory progress as assessed by JCU's Annual Progress Review process. The tuition fee waiver component provided by JCU continues for the approved scholarship duration, provided candidature remains active and in good standing.
Scholars must comply with all CSC terms and conditions, including restrictions on undertaking paid employment without prior approval, and maintaining communication with CSC through their home institution.
