AccessAbility Services has software available to loan to registered students to assist with University study.
Dolphin EasyConverter allows students to convert most types of documents (e.g. pdf, word, rtf) into Audio (Mp3), enlarged text, Daisy Talking Book and/or Braille.
Dolphin EasyConverter can covert scanned or electronic documents.
Dolphin EasyConverter is available for student use in the computer room on the Townsville and Cairns campuses.
Dolphin EasyReader converts documents into a Digital Talking Book (.dtb) format. Dolphin EasyReader allows students to navigate to any section of the text, change the reading voice, customise their preferred text, background and highlight colours; search for words and phrases, and place bookmarks in a book to highlight areas of interest.
Once the document has been converted to the Digital Talking Book using Dolphin EasyConverter, Dolphin EasyReader is available for students to use in the AccessAbility Services computer room on the Townsville and Cairns campuses and can be loaned for use at home.
Dragon Naturally Speaking is speech recognition software that allows you to create documents, emails etc. by speaking into your computer. It learns to recognize your voice instantly and continually improves the more you use it.
Dragon Naturally Speaking can be loaned to students to put on their PC’s or laptop computers.
Thunder is a screen reader which reads aloud what is on the screen. Thunder is normally used for students who are blind or have a vision impairment, but can also be useful for students who have difficulty reading the computer screen for other reasons. Thunder is a free screen reader and can be downloaded on your computer.
AccessApps provides a range of solutions to support writing, reading and planning as well as sensory, cognitive and physical difficulties. For example: screen readers, magnifiers, organisational tools etc.
AccessApps can be downloaded for free onto a USB Drive to use on a range of different computers. USB Drives are also available to loan through AccessAbility Services.
JAWS is a screen reader where the information from a wide variety of applications is read aloud. Jaws acts as a permanent toolbar on the desktop, interacting with applications being used.
JAWS is currently available on the Cairns campus in the Assistive Technology room.
