What is a Mental Health Condition?


Did you know?  Twenty percent of Australians suffer from a psychaitric condition at some atge on thier lives

Mental Health conditions can impair a person's ability to think, feel and behave in a manner that allows optimum functioning in day to day life.

Mental Health conditions may range in type and degree from relatively minor to severe illness that requires ongoing medical treatment.

With appropriate support, most people will recover well from having a Mental Health condition and the first episode may be the only one they ever experience. For others, however, these conditions can interfere with their abilities and relapses may require varying levels of help and management.

There are a number of Mental Health conditions; however, the more common ones seen at AccessAbility Services include depression, schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder and anxiety.

Medications and Mental Health Conditions

Medications can help people to feel better in order to function more effectively in every day life; however it does not change their personality or make them feel happy.

Medications to treat Mental Health conditions may cause side effects such as headaches, drowsiness, persistent thirst, nausea, sweating, blurring of vision, decrease in concentration, reading difficulty and problems with coordination.

Quite often the observable signs of a Mental Health condition are a result of the medication, not of the condition itself.
