False coloured images

Electron microscope images are by their very nature black and white (greyscale). Popular scientific articles in print or digital media often use false coloured images. A variety of techniques can be employed to produce this effect, the "simplest", as demonstrated below, are produced by simply adding colour using digital image editing software. Whilst not adding to the scientific information, they can produce visually interesting effects.
