James Cook University and The Townsville Hospital and Health Service Higher Degree by Research Scholarship

James Cook University (JCU) and The Townsville Hospital and Health Service (THHS) work closely together to service regional north Queensland. Both institutions are leaders in tropical and rural health teaching, research and service delivery and JCU and THHS collaborate in many areas, including clinical and biomedical education, training and research.

The University conducts nationally significant and internationally recognised research in areas such as marine sciences, biodiversity, tropical ecology and environments, global warming, tourism, and tropical medicine and public health care in under-served populations.

THHS strive to be a leader in health care, research and education for regional Australia. The health service is one of the most geographically dispersed catchments, extending west to Richmond and Hughenden, north to Cardwell, south to Home Hill and east to Magnetic and Palm Islands. They support a population of almost 250,000 people.
The health service is also home to Townsville University Hospital (TUH), North Queensland’s only tertiary hospital, which supports a referral catchment of almost 700,000 people.

  • Are commencing, or in the process of applying for, a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at JCU or the ability to meet JCU HDR Admissions requirements if not already enrolled.
  • Have identified advisors in JCU and Townsville Hospital Health Service.
  • Be available to start before mid 2024
  • Open to international and domestic candidates. A fee waiver will apply for international candidates. Overseas Health Cover and Student Amenities and Services fees will apply.

One PhD Co-funded scholarship  by James Cook University and Townsville Hospital and Health Service and will provide a tax free stipend per annum (and tuition fees/OSHC if applicable) of $34,000 per year for 3.5 years

* A cover letter
* An up-to-date cv
* Full academic transcript
* A project proposal with names of advisors from JCU and THHS
* Details of three referees (email/address/contact number).

Your application is checked for completeness and eligibility. After the closing date it will be individually assessed and put forward to a selection committee who will rank your application against others who have applied.  Once an applicant is selected, they will be invited to submit a full application for JCU if they are not already enrolled.  Only successful applications will be notified. You may be asked to attend an interview.

Administration of the Scholarship

This scholarship shall be administered by the Graduate Research School (GRS), on behalf of the Selection Committee.
The funds of the scholarship shall be held in an account in the name of the University and shall be administered by the Graduate Research School in the payment of a fortnightly stipend.
