JCU Brisbane welcomed 28 high school students onto the Brisbane city campus for the Heroes in Business program.

On Monday 12th September, high school students from a variety of schools across Brisbane & Toowoomba attended the Heroes in Business day at the JCU Brisbane campus. JCU Brisbane partnered with one of Australia’s largest mining corporations, Glencore, to deliver an action-packed event. The day gave potential students a taste of life as a business student at university.

Participants engaged in various challenges throughout the day while sampling a variety of subjects offered as part of the business degree at JCU. Guest speaker, Natasha Noy (Coordinator – Pathway Programs at Glencore Zinc Assets Australia), provided students with not only an insight into Glencore Mining but real examples of the vast array of graduate programs and careers on offer after study. Working in groups, the students were challenged to devise an innovative business solution for Glencore Mining and then pitch that idea to the other groups.

It is safe to say ingenious solutions were pitched covering safety, sustainability, marketing, technology and wellbeing. All the group pitches were fantastic with honourable mentions going to ‘Glenfest; rave in a cave’ which would see Glencore hosting a music festival in a mine site; Glencore Shipping and Distribution using electric cargo watercraft; and a Glencore safety mining suit. Peer review was brilliant to witness with each group incorporating what they had learnt throughout the day to ask some thought provoking questions and provide constructive criticism.

The day was a real success made possible by our fantastic local school partners, our industry associates and, of course, our fabulous cohort of students. Thank you to you all. JCU Brisbane looks forward to inviting many more high school students to our campus for future events!
