Position Description

Becoming an Academic Writing Facilitator will offer a unique experience to grow in a professional and personal capacity.

You will assist student participants to enhance their academic writing skills in different discipline specific genres. In genre specific breakout sessions, you will support students to begin their assignments. You will support the students to plan and draft their assignments and provide advice to enable them to become more competent, capable and confident academic writers.

Selection Criteria

  1. A current senior undergraduate or postgraduate student.
  2. A course GPA of at least 5.5.
  3. Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills.
  4. Demonstrated generic and genre specific high level academic writing skills

Position Description

Becoming a PASS leader will offer a unique experience to grow in a professional and personal capacity. Working within a supportive and enjoyable team environment your role will be to promote students’ academic development by modelling strategies and providing advice that will enable students to become successful, independent learners.

As a PASS leader, you will facilitate group discussion central to helping students gain a deeper understanding of course concepts. Intrinsic to this is the ability to balance/leverage different personalities and abilities within your sessions and act as a mentor to younger students who are transitioning to university life.

PASS facilitators are supervised and supported by the PASS coordinator.

Selection Criteria

  • A current senior   undergraduate (in 2nd, 3rd or 4th year)
  • A course GPA of at least 6.0
  • Achieved a HIGH DISTINCTION or better in the   PASS subject being facilitated
  • Excellent interpersonal and   oral communication skills
  • Excellent organisational and   time management skills
  • Working knowledge of   Microsoft Office products, particularly Outlook and Excel
  • A broad understanding of the   PASS program

Position Description

Sessional tutors are employed to support students’ academic development within subjects through facilitated tutorials and workshops.  This role requires an ability to develop weekly lesson plans based on subject focus area and learning outcomes, recording attendance, provide student consultations, as well as the marking of  assessment pieces.

Sessional tutors facilitate group discussions that are central to helping students gain a deeper understanding of subject and course concepts, and provide advice to support students to become successful, independent learners.

Position Description

Unistart Facilitators are employed to facilitate a two-day preparatory program for commencing undergraduate students to assist them in their transition into university.  The Unistart Facilitators design and deliver a schedule of activities that aim to foster peer engagement, support development of independent learning skills, showcase JCU support services and learning technologies, and reduce anxiety levels in new students.  Unistart Facilitators create a series of highly interactive sessions that encourage group discussion about common challenges that face commencing students, normalise help-seeking behaviours, and incorporate helpful strategies for academic success to aid student retention.

Selection Criteria

  1. Undergraduate JCU student who is an experienced Student Mentor or Mentor Leader
  2. A Credit average to demonstrate an understanding of effective study practices.
  3. Endorsement from an academic staff member in their enrolled course.
  4. Good interpersonal and communication skills, as well as leadership experience.
