Online Tools for Assessment

Online assessment and assignment submission can greatly benefit students, teaching staff and administrative support providers. In particular, it improves workflows where students are remotely located or distributed across multiple campuses.

It is also environmentally-friendly, as it means less paper. Educators can use tests or assignments and can encompass a variety of question formats (multiple choice, multiple answer, hotspot, fill-in-the-blank, true-false, short answer/essay and file) as well as automated marking and student/question performance analysis.

When combined with online marking, feedback and reporting, electronic assessment and assignment submission results in significant administrative improvements and provides faster feedback for students.

  • The assignment dropbox in LearnJCU accepts a number of different files: PDF documents, Word documents, presentation files and multimedia files however large video files will likely require alternate submission processes.

  • Clear submission requirements must be given to students such as file types accepted, file names, the maximum number of files to be submitted and file sizes.

  • Students must be provided with sufficient guidance on how to submit their work and technical assistance should be provided to individual students if required.

  • Online submission allows one student within a group to submit on behalf of all group members. Subject coordinators are able to allocate the marking of specific assignments to individual tutors. Supported technologies.

Video Assessment Setup
JCU's video capture platform, Panopto, allows students to create individual (not group) media assignment submissions when the educator has activated a Panopto assignment folder.

Assignments
The Assignment tool is a dropbox for electronic submission and bulk download of any file type. Materials submitted via the assignment dropboxes are not checked for originality.

Tests
Tests are a useful way to test students’ understanding of key concepts or provide evaluative feedback. A range of question types are available in Ultra including Multiple choice, Multiple answer, Fill in the blank(s), True/False, Essay and Calculated Formula.

Safe Assign Originality Reports
SafeAssign is an originality checking tool that compares submitted assignments against a set of academic papers to identify areas of overlap between the submitted assignment and existing works.

Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor
Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor provide a complementary solution for reducing the potential for cheating in online exams and verifying the identity of the students undertaking the assessment.

Grade Centre
The Grade Centre allows teaching staff to record, organise and display assessment data such as scores and grades for all students in a subject and also provide feedback to students.

Rubrics
A rubric is a grading tool that lists assessment criteria for an assignment and provides online feedback to students on their level of achievement on those criteria. Rubrics help articulate the requirements of an assessment task and can be used to explain assessment decisions.

Assignment Inline Marking - BB Annotate
'BB Annotate' is LearnJCU's in-line grading feedback tool that allows you to annotate student assignments directly within the browser on files uploaded and converted for display in the inline viewer. You can assign a grade, provide feedback, and make notes for yourself.

Recording Audio Feedback
In LearnJCU there is an option to provide audio feedback where you would usually provide written feedback against an assessment submission.
