Our business, management and marketing faculty spearhead relevant and high-impact research on governance and sustainability issues that are pertinent to Asia. This includes corporate governance and corporate sustainability, green marketing, knowledge management and innovation, operational management, international strategies of multinational firms from emerging economies and smart cities. Their research has been published in high-impact journals such as Journal of Business Ethics, International Business Review, Corporate Governance: An International Review, Management and Organisation Review, Australasian Journal of Information Systems, Journal of Competence-Based Strategic Management, and so on. The research has brought insights to various industry partners.

Currently, our faculty members are leading and heavily involved in multiple research projects in three areas:

  1. Sustainable marketing and circular economy. Our faculty members have been working on various projects examining the consumers acceptance of sustainable practices and circular economy approaches adopted in various industries such as food, electronics and energy industries. Their research outcome has been published in Journal of Business Research, Journal of Cleaner Production, Science of the Total Environment, etc.
  2. Entrepreneurship in emerging economies. Our faculty members are working on projects focusing on entrepreneurial motivation and practices at micro and macro levels in emerging economies such as Africa. Their research findings have been published in journals and books such as Journal of African Business, International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour & Research, Journal of Enterprising Culture, etc.
  3. Corporate social responsibility. Our faculty members are working together to tackle with the issues related to CSR policies and practices in Asia and other regions in different sectors, such as SMEs, luxury sectors and others. The research findings have been published in Journal of Business Ethics, Business & Society, etc.
  4. Stock market fluctuation. Our faculty members focused on the antecedents and consequence of stock market fluctuation and published in Journal of Empirical Finance, Nomura Journal of Asian Capital Markets, etc.
  5. Digitalisation and business. Our faculty members explored the impact of digitalisation and technology on education, tourism and hospitality and other business sectors. Their research findings are published in journals such as Electronic Journal of e-Learning, Information Technology & Tourism, E-Learning and Digital Media, and so on.

Entrepreneurs’ creative responses to institutional challenges: Insider perspectives from Sub-Saharan Africa

Most of the entrepreneurship research in emerging countries uses macro level or meso level analyses of large surveys to examine institutional constraints and enablers of entrepreneurial activities. Dr. Emiel Eijdenberg and his co-author dr. Neil Thompson from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam observed a need for more detailed understandings about what these entrepreneurial activities really mean. Voices from the ground were needed. This is how the idea for their book entitled “Entrepreneurs’ creative responses to institutional challenges: Insider perspectives from Sub-Saharan Africa” was born.

The backbone of the book is an extensive amount of self-collected data. Dr. Eijdenberg conducted four focus group interviews with 60 entrepreneurship experts and experienced entrepreneurs in Tanzania and Zambia in 2017 and 2018. The book illustrates how entrepreneurs’ institutional context influences their sustainability practices as an individual and how entrepreneurs use different creative and bricolage methods of sustainability practices that contribute to social and environmental well-being. The personal experiences and stories of the experts and entrepreneurs offer nuanced and insider perspectives of the everyday struggles of Tanzanian and Zambian entrepreneurs. Besides the personal narratives, the book contains much additional socio-economic information related to entrepreneurship in Sub-Saharan Africa, relevant for academics, practitioners and students.
