Duration:

1 January 2017 to 31 December 2017

Key Words:

Cairns Northern Beaches, Rise in Premiums, Risk and Insurance

Project Description

Unpacking this issue is of interest to us both scholarly and from a public policy perspective as the region has a highly mobile demographic including people who have shifted here for lifestyle reasons.

Looking at how these newcomers understand risk factors, such as cyclones, and comparing that to long term residents will help us further unpack the migration stories of those moving today. It will also help us to identify how people mitigate these risks through insurance, and whether there are inequalities in relation to who is able to insure and who is not.

We are also informed by ongoing debates about insurance costs and how those in the Northern Beaches are interpreting the rise in premiums. Using survey data, we hope to shed more light on this issue and produce reports that will be able to assist policy makers to understand perceptions of risk and insurance in this area.
