Available in Townsville only in SP's 1 and 2. This subject allows students to gain insights into and practical experience in community legal practice, with weekly placements at a community legal service organisation and small group classes. Places are limited

Process for applying and enrolling

Students must apply and be approved to enrol in this subject

Fill out Expression of Interest (EOI) form and submit as per instructions provided on form. The EOI will need to be downloaded and saved before you populate it.

What happens next?

1. EOI is assessed by Course Coordinator


2. If approved, you will receive an email advising of this. The email will also contain information about how to enrol so please ensure you monitor your emails regularly


3. In the event the application is not approved, you will have the opportunity to enrol into one of the other placement subjects

2. WIL Placement Coordinator connects students with hosts. Student to organise a meeting with host to discuss a prospective placement

4. In the event the application is not approved, you will have the opportunity to either apply or enrol into one of the other placement subjects

If you are employed and wish to undertake placement in your workplace, you must apply for LA4044 Independent Project

Self-sourcing a placement allows students to target the legal workplace that interests them the most. Some ideas that may assist in sourcing a placement opportunity:

• Only approach legal firms who are not registered placement partners (email placements@jcu.edu.au to confirm)


• Use your existing contacts and make new contacts through student associations, professional networks and JCU career events


• Research legal firms which fit your area of interest and expertise


• Consider what skills or qualities you could offer an employer


• Be professional and confident – let the firm know you are interested in undertaking degree and industry-related work for academic credit

Process for applying and enrolling

Students cannot self-enrol

1. Source your preferred host. You should be prepared when approaching potential hosts. It is recommended you provide a Resume and Cover Letter highlighting your strengths and areas of interest, and the skills you would like to further develop whilst on placement

   Print the following information and give to host:

   • Supervisor Placement Guide


2. Once the host has confirmed they are willing to take you on as an intern, you will need to discuss with them and develop an appropriate position description outlining duties to be undertaken. The following business' details are required:
   • Business Name
   • Business' ABN
   • Business' Address
   • Name of Workplace Supervisor
   • Supervisor's phone number
   • Supervisor's email address


3. Transpose these details and position description into the LA4041 – Legal Placement Application form and submit as per instructions. The Application form will need to be downloaded and saved before you populate it

1. Application will be assessed by WIL in Law Coordinator who will contact host supervisor


2. If approved, you will receive an email advising of this. The email will also contain information about how to enrol so please ensure you monitor your emails regularly

THE OFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC PROSECUTIONS WORK EXPERIENCE PLACEMENT PROGRAM  (ODPP WEPP)

The ODPP WEPP offer a four week placement offering students the opportunity to gain direct experience in criminal law. Students must have a genuine interest in criminal law, demonstrate they can work in both a team and autonomously, have highly developed written and oral communication skills, and are in at least their second year of a law degree or are completing PLT

The ODPP can host students in any of the following locations: Beenleigh, Brisbane, Cairns, Ipswich, Maroochydore, Rockhampton, Southport, Toowoomba and Townsville

Eligible students receive email notifications of application instructions around early April (for SP6), and early September (for SP10). The internship is undertaken in either SP 6 or 10.  Students who are accepted into the program can elect to use the internship either for academic credit (LA4041), or as work experience

THE CAIRNS POLICE PROSECUTIONS WORK EXPERIENCE PLACEMENT PROGRAM  (CPP WEPP)

The CPP WEPP offer a summer program (SP10) where the successful student will have the opportunity to undertake a four week unpaid placement, shadowing prosecutors in court in trials, sentences and bail applications in the Cairns Magistrates Court and the Cairns Children’s Court. Student will participate in mock hearings and bail applications. This program will give participants an introduction to criminal law advocacy and pave the way for potential employment as a prosecutor at Cairns. Student will be mentored by prosecutors

Eligible students receive an email notification of application instructions early April. The internship is undertaken in SP10.  Students who are accepted into the program can elect to use the internship either for academic credit (LA4041), or as work experience

QUEENSLAND PARLIAMENTARY RESEARCH INTERNSHIP (QPRI)

The QPRI is a program in which students are attached to a Member of Parliament or a Senior Officer of the Parliament to undertake a mutually agreed research project. The internship program is administered by the Chamber, Education and Communication Services section

The Program aims to give students a first-hand appreciation of the relationship between political practice and theory, an in depth understanding of the political processes and the role of Parliament, and the opportunity to obtain relevant research experience in a new environment

Eligible students receive email notifications of application instructions around June. The internship is undertaken in SP2.  Students who are accepted into the program must use the internship for academic credit (LA4044)

LA4039 Advocacy and Criminal Sentencing is offered in Study Period 8

Subject Description

This subject is designed primarily for students already employed in a workplace to develop an independent project for the workplace/industry. Students will be required to prepare a project proposal (which will be assessed by the WIL in Law Coordinator) and to complete a project relevant to their degree and workplace

Process for applying and enrolling

Students cannot self-enrol

1. Use the Independent Project application form as your submission for this subject. Please note, until the form is signed by both yourself and your workplace supervisor, the project will not be approved
2. Liaise with your employer to develop a workplace-relevant project. The project you will embark on is to be separate from your current role in the workplace. The proposal is required to demonstrate how the project assists in developing/improving workplace skills; address an industry issue and contribute to industry
3. Print the LA4044 Supervisor Guide and give to your employer
4. To submit your project, email the completed Project Description/Placement Conditions form to placements@jcu.edu.au

What happens next?

1. Project will be assessed by the WIL in Law Coordinator
2. Student will receive an email advising them of their project approval and of the next course of action
3. In the event the project is not approved, you will have the opportunity to apply for/enrol into one of the other placement subjects, being LA4041 Legal Placement or LA4043 Multidisciplinary Project
