Clinical Supervision

Professor Russell Hawkins

Funding from the Australian Department of Health and Aging allowed the develop of a curriculum for clinical supervision training for psychologists and mental health nurses. The curriculum was based on an international literature review of recent published data and informed by a combination of the best available empirical evidence and expert opinion regarding best practice for the training of clinical supervisors. We also undertook an audit of available training programs in Australia. We proposed making our new programme accessible to rural and remote psychologists (a self-directed training syllabus was to be designed for flexible online delivery, in order to increase the accessibility and availability of training to rural and remote clinicians) however the Psychology Board of Australia has subsequently provided a list of “approved” supervision training programmes so attention is now being focussed on conceptual and more general issues relating to clinical supervision.
