Professor Ed Helmes

My interests in older people developed through my basic interests in psychological measurement. Early work in this area was based upon developing tests to assess the functioning of older people in residential care, and this has expanded into various other areas of interest with older people. Work is currently ongoing in examining various aspects in normal aging and the associated changes in executive functions, which are associated with the neurophysiological functions located in the prefrontal cortical regions. Other work currently being completed in association with students is studies of changes in working memory functions, some of which is also related to prefrontal cortical areas, and also of changes in cognition associated with physical exercise.
