Associate Dean, Research

The Associate Dean of Research is responsible for the strategic and regulatory leadership of research in the College of Medicine and Dentistry.  Working closely with the Research Coordinator and Associate Dean, Research Education, we aim to support and encourage research that makes a difference through addressing the health and health service needs of populations in the tropics, with a particular focus on the needs of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders and rural and remote populations. Our research is usually conducted in partnership with a range of health service, governmental and community stakeholders.

Roles include:

  • developing strategic research priorities;
  • advising the Dean and the broader University about research needs;
  • representing the College in the development and implementation of JCU policies and procedures;
  • ensuring that research practices conform with best practice; monitoring research performance;
  • supporting the development of research and researchers;
  • supporting the development and peer review of external research applications;
  • providing guidance on strategic recruitment for research, and
  • member of the Division’s  Research Committee and Co-Chair (with the Associate Dean, Research and Education) of the College Research and Research Education Committee.

Associate Dean, Research and Education

The Associate Dean Research Education (ADRE) is responsible for the regulatory leadership of research in the College. A strong working relationship between the Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidate and their Advisor is essential to the successful and timely completion of their research degree and the role of the ADRE is to support this relationship that encourages HDR candidates to produce a thesis that is a substantial and original contribution to knowledge in their field of study. It is also the responsibility of the ADRE who is the link between the College and the Graduate Research School (GRS) to provide advice and support when required to Advisors on application for admission to the JCU Register of Advisors, upgrading of their level of Advisory Accreditation on the Register and on the HDR Advisor Training program offered by the GRS. The ADRE works closely with the Supervisor of Academic Services (Research) and Associate Dean, Research to foster research in the College by supporting scholarship applications from suitably qualified candidates for full-time study, while also encouraging part-time candidates from the various professions within the College to apply to undertake a higher degree.

Roles include:

  • Advising students, advisors and when necessary the Dean on the policies and procedures with respect to supervision of JCU HDR candidates
  • Representing the College on the Research Education Sub-Committee (RESC)  and the Research Education Sub-committee Executive (RESCE) for the University
  • Member of the Division’s Research Committee and Co-Chair (with the Associate Dean Research) of the College Research and Education Committee

Associate Dean, Students

The role of the Associate Dean Students is to provide leadership within the College of Medicine and Dentistry across all programs and sites in ensuring the systems of student support including linking students with appropriate pastoral, health and academic support are appropriate and meet student requirements and university responsibilities. The Associate Dean Students takes a lead role in the management of student issues including overseeing allocations to clinical schools, monitoring student behaviour, and dealing with complaints and misconduct. The Associate Dean Students chairs the College’s Student Support and Professional Practice Strategic Committee.

Associate Dean, Teaching and Learning

The Associate Dean, Learning & Teaching is responsible for the development and promotion of a learning and teaching culture committed to excellence and innovation and a positive student experience across the College of Medicine & Dentistry. The ADLT provides leadership to promote learning and teaching quality and innovation within the College. Providing support to the Dean, the ADLT actively pursues University, Divisional and College goals in learning and teaching, including blended learning and the design of quality curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.

Roles include:

  • Working collaboratively to facilitate cross-College, interdisciplinary learning & teaching initiatives.
  • Actively supporting College staff with teaching awards and grants, both internal and external, and promote the scholarship of learning and teaching within the College.
  • Support the work of Course Coordinators, Educational Designers, Learning Advisors and Library staff.
  • Mentor and/or arrange mentoring for College staff in relation to best practice in learning and teaching and Facilitate processes for peer review of teaching within the College.
  • Ensure support for appropriate staff development particularly for new and sessional staff.
  • Support active engagement with quality indicators for learning and teaching data, including YourJCU Survey and external surveys, to engage staff in continuous improvement of learning and teaching.
  • Actively liaise with the Learning, Teaching and Student Engagement Directorate to ensure appropriate professional learning opportunities and strategic whole of institution activities
