My research interest is the identification of potential disease biomarkers using high throughput post-genomic and bioinformatic techniques. Since joining the Vascular Biology Unit in late 2008, I have applied these approaches to further understanding of peripheral artery disease (PAD) using human tissue biopsies and model systems. This has been achieved through the development of robust national, and international collaborations. Recently my work has become more clinically oriented, and I have played a leading role in the establishment of a large biobank comprising blood and tissue samples collected from consenting PAD patients.
I am passionate about highlighting the importance, and relevance of research to the medical profession, and am establishing avenues to enable MBBS students to become involved in scientific research. Notably, I have achieved this goal by successfully mentoring undergraduates in the preparation of competitive grant applications, and supervising resultant laboratory-based projects. As part of the JCU SMD honours and research committees, I am spear-heading initiatives to incorporate critical scientific appraisal within the MBBS curriculum.
