This year she was nominated as a state finalist in the 2017 Royal Australian College of General Practitioners Awards for General Practitioner of the Year.

Doctor Claudia Collins, originally from Mission Beach, moved to Townsville in 2003 to complete a Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery at James Cook University (JCU).“James Cook University has a really strong rural, remote, Indigenous and tropical health background, and having this as such a strong background through all of medical school training set the stage in my mind for the possibility of an Indigenous health career.

“I never did any metropolitan placement. All of my placements were based in rural areas and I loved them all. I think the placements gave me the confidence to be able to go back into a rural area and gave me the confidence to go home and apply what I’ve learnt.”
