Level of entry is determined by the minimum English language proficiency requirements outlined below.

Minimum English language proficiency requirements

Students of non-English speaking backgrounds must have an adequate English language capacity assessed as outlined below.

Admission to this course at EAP Level 3 (Extended) requires:

  • New Placement Test – 62-79
  • IELTS – 5.0
  • TOEFL IBT – 60-78
  • TOEFL Computer – 174-212
  • TOEFL Paper – 501-549
  • PTE Academic - 41

Admission to this course at EAP Level 3 requires:

  • ELPP 2 OR
  • New Placement Test – 69-79
  • IELTS – 5.5
  • TOEFL IBT – 66-78

  • PTE Academic - 46

Admission to this course at EAP Level 4 requires:

Academic Requirements for Course Completion

Credit points

12 – 36 credit points

(Requirements vary according to students’ English proficiency at entry.)

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of English for Academic Purposes, graduates will be able to:

  • demonstrate understanding of a variety of spoken discourse

  • display critical thinking on academic topics through speech and writing

  • derive meaning of specific details from different types of discourse

  • produce academic essays, following Australian university conventions

  • read academic texts, using appropriate reading techniques

Course completion requirements

Completion of EAP Level 3 and EAP Level 3 Extended:

  • Exit score of 55% equates to Overall IELTS   score of 5.5 (this fulfils the language entry requirements for the Diploma of   Higher Education)
  • Exit score of 60% equates to Overall IELTS   score of 6.0 (this fulfils the language entry requirement for EAP Level 4,   EAP Level 4 Extended, and Band 1 JCU programs)

Completion of EAP Level 4:

  • Exit score of 60% equates to Overall IELTS   score of 6.5

Completion of EAP Level 4 Extended:

  • Exit score of 60% equates to Overall IELTS   score of 7.0 (additional testing is required for entry into courses requiring   an IELTS 7).
