Minimum English language proficiency requirements

Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 2 Schedule II of the JCU Admissions Policy.

Post-admission requirements

Current Provide First Aid and CPR Certificate:

Students must hold a current Provide First Aid Certificate before undertaking professional or clinical placements. Students are responsible for any costs associated with obtaining this certificate.

Hepatitis B immunisation:

Students must provide evidence of being immune to hepatitis B within the first teaching period of their studies. A blood-borne viral disease may result in a student’s inability to obtain a placement in a Queensland Health facility and consequently may result in their inability to complete the requirements of the course. If a student has not complied with the above requirement by the last day of the first teaching period of their studies, their enrolment will be terminated immediately.

Course learning outcomes

The new Biomedical Science graduate will be able to:

  • Demonstrate integrated theoretical and technical knowledge and skills, with depth in the underlying concepts and principles across the range of biomedical science disciplines

  • Critically review, analyse, synthesise and apply scientific evidence and process to a range of social and economic contexts

  • Apply recognised methods and tools of biomedical science to the process of enquiry and discovery

  • Communicate scientific information and philosophies clearly and coherently through well-developed English language and numeracy proficiency, to a range of audiences for a range of purposes using a variety of modes

  • Demonstrate personal and social responsibility and accountability through an awareness of ethical frameworks, by working safely and responsibly in individual and team environments

  • Critically reflect upon the socio-ecological impact of health issues in tropical, rural and remote and indigenous communities

  • Reflect on current skills, knowledge and attitudes, in order to plan and implement ongoing personal and professional development needs.

Advanced Standing

Eligibility

Students may apply for advanced standing for previous tertiary study in accordance with the Advanced Standing and Articulation policy and associated procedures.

Currency

Advanced standing will be granted only for studies completed in the 10 years prior to the commencement of this course.

Expiry

Advanced standing gained for any subject shall be cancelled 17 years after the date of the examination upon which the advanced standing is based if, by then, the student has not completed the course of study prescribed for the degree.

Other restrictions

A maximum of 9 credit points of advanced standing may be granted at level 3.
