Admission Requirements

Course pre-requisites

Completion of an AQF Level 7 Bachelor Degree in a discipline cognate to the proposed area of research, within the previous five years; and

Achievement of an overall grade point average of 5.0 (i.e. credit average) across their undergraduate degree and/or a grade point average of 5.0 in the fourth year of their undergraduate degree, with credits or better in discipline-specific areas.

OR

Current enrolment in Level 6 of the James Cook University Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery pass degree and requesting to study concurrently, and achievement of an overall grade point average of 5.0 (i.e. credit average) across levels 4 and 5 of their undergraduate degree.

Minimum English language proficiency requirements

Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 3b Schedule II of the JCU Admissions Policy.

Additional selection requirements

Application for entry to the program is by approval of the College Dean.

Quota restrictions on the number of honours places available may apply from time to time as determined by the College Dean.

Students for honours who have graduated with a pass degree from this or another university or who graduated more than five years ago may be required to complete such coursework or assessment as the College Dean recommends.

Special Admission requirements

Students enrolled in this degree will be registered with the Medical Board of Australia through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) for the duration of their program of study or until they are no longer enrolled. Graduates will be eligible to apply for professional registration with the Medical Board of Australia through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Students who enrol in level 6 of the JCU MBBS program will be required to complete the requirements of the MBBS program before the MBBS (Honours) will be awarded.

Course learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (Honours) graduates will be able to:

  • Apply coherent and advanced knowledge of the underlying principles and concepts in medical science

  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills in quantitative and/or qualitative research approaches through critical analysis, evaluation and application of the relevant approach

  • Design and successfully conduct well designed research projects that are ethically and culturally safe and empowering in partnership with relevant collaborators

  • Critically evaluate own capabilities as developing researchers to enable structured further learning

  • Communicate a clear and coherent exposition of knowledge and ideas to a variety of audiences.
