The course can be undertaken at four levels:

  • EAP Level 2

  • EAP Level 3

  • EAP Level 4

  • EAP Level 5

Level of entry is determined by the minimum English language proficiency requirements outlined below.

Minimum English language proficiency requirements

Students of non-English speaking backgrounds must have an adequate English language capacity assessed as outlined below.

Admission to this course at EAP Level 2 requires:

  • New Placement Test – 62-68

  • IELTS – 5.0

  • TOEFL IBT – 60-65

  • TOEFL Paper – 501-517

  • PTE Academic - 41

Admission to this course at EAP Level 3 requires:

  • EAP 2 or

  • New Placement Test – 69-79

  • IELTS – 5.5

  • TOEFL IBT – 66-78

  • TOEFL Paper – 518-549

  • PTE Academic - 46

Admission to this course at EAP Level 4 requires:

  • EAP3 or

  • New Placement Test – 80-85

  • IELTS – 6.0+

  • TOEFL IBT – 79+

  • TOEFL Computer – 213+

  • TOEFL Paper – 550+

  • PTE Academic - 57

Admission to this course at EAP Level 5 requires:

  • EAP 3 or

  • New Placement Test – 86 and above

  • IELTS – 6.5+

  • TOEFL IBT – 90+

  • TOEFL Computer – 213+

  • TOEFL Paper – 577+

  • PTE Academic - 64+

Academic Requirements for Course Completion

Credit points

12 – 48 credit points

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of English for Academic Purposes, graduates will be able to:

  • follow Australian academic conventions

  • engage in academic practices related to researching and referencing

  • draw on a range of reading and listening strategies

  • derive literal and interpretive meaning from written, spoken and visual academic texts

  • construct a range of written, spoken and visual academic text types

  • display critical reading and thinking skills through extended writing and speaking on academic topics

  • work collaboratively to achieve learning outcomes

Course completion requirements

Completion of EAP Level 2:

  • Exit score of 60% equates to Overall IELTS score of 5.5 (this fulfils the language entry requirement for EAP Level 3, and the the Diploma of Higher Education)

Completion of  EAP Level 3:

  • Exit score of 55% equates to Overall IELTS score of 5.5 (this fulfils the language entry requirements of the Diploma of Higher Education)
  • Exit score of 60% equates to Overall IELTS score of 6.0 (this fulfils the language entry requirement for EAP Level 4, and Band 1 JCU programs)

Completion of EAP Level 4:

  • Exit score of 60% equates to Overall IELTS score of 6.5 (this fulfils the language entry requirements for EAP Level 5, and Band 2 JCU programs).

Completion of EAP Level 5:

  • Exit score of 60% equates to Overall IELTS score of 7.0 (Additional testing is required for entry into courses requiring an IELTS 7.0)
