Research Capacity

The Division is internationally recognised for its world ranking in marine biology, aquaculture, tourism and climate change. It also has ERA (Excellence in Research for Australia) rankings well above or above world average in the areas of Inorganic and Organic Chemistry, Geochemistry, Geology, Physical Geography and Environmental Geoscience, Ecological Applications, Environmental Science and Management, Ecology, Plant Biology, Fisheries Science, Minerals Engineering, Linguistics and Archaeology.

Research excellence and impact are underpinned by our world class research facilities, including The Cairns Institute, Orpheus Island Research Station, Daintree Rainforest Observatory, and the Marine and Aquaculture Research Facility, the largest algal and carbon sequestration facility in the southern hemisphere, as well as the unique location of JCU's Townsville and Cairns campuses adjacent to two World Heritage Areas: the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics.
