Professor Joe Baker AO, OBE, after whom James Cook University’s multipurpose sports field is named, was a foundation staff member at the University College of Townsville. He remained involved with James Cook University throughout his life, acting as a mentor to staff and students and giving freely of his time and advocacy to advance the mission of the University - to conduct teaching and research on issues of importance to the tropics.
Joe had a distinguished career and was publicly recognised for his contributions to chemistry, marine biology, and the study of the environment more broadly. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1982 for services to marine science, and appointed as an officer in the Order of Australia in 2002 for his contribution to environmental studies and chemistry.
