Armed and Bloodthirsty: Hookworms in Pets (and humans) in the Tropics

Presented by Dr Constantin Constantinoiu
Senior Lecturer – College of Public Health, Medical and Vet Sciences

In the steamy paradise of the tropics lurks a parasite with quite a bite. Hookworms have large mouth cavities armed with teeth or cutting plates. These come in handy for adult hookworms to attach to the lining of the small intestine, where they feast on blood and tissue.

JCU’s Dr Constantin Constantinoiu will take you on the dangerous journey of hookworms and describe the possible deadly consequences of what happens to infected hosts. Find out why hookworms love the tropics and how they affect you and your animals. Discover more about diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the disease in pets.

Light refreshments will be served following the lecture.
