JCU Vs Army Games 2019

Townsville

When: 20 September 19, 1pm -- 8pm

Where: JCU Joe Baker Field & Townsville Basketball Stadium, Murray Sporting Complex

Townsville is known for its large University and Army populations and the rivalry that exists between the two groups. In an effort to strengthen the bonds between the University and Army communities, James Cook University and the Australian Army’s North Queensland Contingent carry out an annual event called " The Battle of the Icons".

The Battle of the Icons event sees multiple sports contested between the two groups over one big day of competition. The event culminates with the prestigious Chancellor’s and Commander’s Cup rugby union matches.  The Men's and Women's rugby matches always prove to be a show of amazing talent and the fierce rivalry between the two entities. The Rugby Union is usually the decider to who wins the ultimate bragging rights as the more dominant organisation each year.

The event is a great way to highlight some of the talented up and coming athletes of the Townsville community and emphasises the importance for both organisations on living active lifestyles and community participation through sport.  Local media attention is given to the event and many prominent community members attend the games to spectate and barrack for their respective teams.
