JCU works closely with schools to inspire and motivate students about the world of study and career possibilities available through university education.
To assist students through their education journey to make informed decisions about future career pathways, JCU offers a range of engagement activities and events where secondary school students can experience university life and sample JCU’s world class-facilities and courses. We invite and encourage schools and students to participate our in-school and on-campus engagement opportunities.
JCU school engagement activities have been developed in line with research conducted with students, guidance and careers officers, teachers and parents, and are designed to be relevant to student's age and stage in their decision-making process about their study and career choices for the future.
JCU engages with all the community to promote a sustainable region that is socially inclusive. Under the Australian Government’s Higher Education Participation and Partnership Program (HEPPP), JCU runs programs with HEPPP identified schools that aim to widen university participation by raising aspirations, promote the benefits of university study, and enable successful transition to tertiary education.

Engagement Opportunities for students in Year 7 and 8
JCU offers engagement opportunities designed to meet the needs of Year 7 and 8 students and support them to develop an understanding of their interest areas through hands on and interactive activities.
Activities focus on helping students discover their passion and interests, developing positive self-esteem strategies, identifying key support people who can promote positive educational outcomes and decision making to assist in their study and career choices. Our programs increase familiarity with university, breakdown barriers associated with tertiary studies and introduce the concept of tertiary study to guide their decisions throughout high school.
Engagement Opportunities for students in Year 9 and 10
JCU offers engagement opportunities designed to meet the needs of Year 9 and 10 students through providing opportunities and experiences to explore their strengths and interests and support the Senior Education and Training (SET) planning process.
Activities focus on expanding career knowledge, self-development, and skills/talent exploration to ensure confidence in career aspirations. Our programs equip students with information about tertiary study options, course information, and career pathways to aid in decision-making about year 11 and 12 subject selection. Programs also provide information about university life including opportunities to study overseas, accommodation, finance, scholarships, and pathway programs.
Engagement Opportunities for students in Year 11 and 12
Activities are designed to support student’s success in years 11 and 12 and to build on programs delivered earlier in secondary school. Our programs help student’s continue to reflect on their interests and skills and to help plan study and career options. Year 11 and 12 programs also provide students with knowledge and skills to make the transitional move between school and university
