About the University

Doshisha University, also referred to as Dodai, is a private university in Kyoto City, Japan. Established in 1875, it is one of Japan's oldest private institutions of higher learning, and has approximately 30,000 students enrolled on four different campuses in Kyoto. Doshisha was founded by Joseph Hardy Neesima as "Doshisha English School", and in 1920 it was granted university status. The university now encompasses 14 faculties and 16 graduate schools with numerous affiliated institutions including Doshisha Women's College of Liberal Arts.

Kyoto, once the capital of Japan, is a city on the island of Honshu. It's famous for its numerous classical Buddhist temples, as well as gardens, imperial palaces, Shinto shrines and traditional wooden houses. It’s also known for formal traditions such as kaiseki dining, consisting of multiple courses of precise dishes, and geisha, female entertainers often found in the Gion district.

Doshisha University will provide accommodations to exchange students. In case that students wish to look for their own places, please be sure to inform the Office of International Students in advance.

Cost of living

The average monthly living expenses in Kyoto are approximately YEN 100,000 per month. Exchange student required to enroll into Japanese National Health Insurance after arrival. Insurance fee is approximate YEN 1,500/month.

Visa requirements

When the student is accepted, the International Center will send an official Letter of Acceptance from Doshisha University and a document for visa application “Certificate of Eligibility for a Status of Residence” to the student’s home institution. Generally, it will take two months to send you these documents after the application deadline.

Other information

JASSO International Student Scholarship for Short-term Study in Japan The scholarship offered by JASSO (Japanese Student Services Organization) is available for those who have outstanding academic records. Exchange students will be provided YEN 80,000 per month up to 10 months. Number of grantees may be subject to change. To apply for the Scholarship, please fill in the required form and submit it to the Office of International Students by the given deadline. We will select qualified applicants and recommend to JASSO who will make the final decision upon the scholarship applications.
