The 41.6 hectare Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University campus is built on a hillside of the Jumonjibaru area, overlooking downtown Beppu and Beppu Bay, which is connected to the Pacific. APU has a student enrolment of more than 5,500, with nearly half of the student population made up of international students. APU is the only Japanese university to adopt a fully bilingual education system.
Beppu is a city located in Ōita Prefecture on the island of Kyushu at the west end of Beppu Bay with a population of about 125,000. A relatively small city, it is famous for its unique and visually stunning hot springs (the aptly named Hells of Beppu), which are one of Japan's Three Great Hot Springs. Beppu is situated along the coast and pressed by mountains, making for a thin and long city. Most of the well-known onsens and tourist attractions, including most of the Jigoku or "hells", are in the Kannawa area.
