HDR Induction

All face to face workshops have been put on hold until further notice.

HDR Induction can now be completed online via the Higher Degree by Research Student Organisation in LearnJCU.

The Resilient HDR Candidature and Respectful Relationships Workshops have been postponed until further notice. If you have not completed these workshops please note that this will not hold up your milestones. You will be able to complete these workshops once we can schedule them in

All HDR candidates must attend the two-day face-to-face Induction as soon as possible once enrolled in their degree.

Induction is a two-day course filled with information, interaction and networking to get your degree off to a great start!

Day 1 includes:
  • How to be a successful HDR candidate
  • Our HDR Ambassadors reflecting on: What I wish I had known when I started my research higher degree
  • How to access services offered by the Library, Student Equity and Wellbeing and JCU Connect
  • Preparing for Confirmation of Candidature
  • The process for Higher Degree by Research at JCU
  • Special session for International Research Students; SKIP (Skills for International Postgraduates)

Day 2 includes:
  • Resilient HDR Candidature - 9am to 12pm
Successfully completing a Higher Degree by Research requires skills to manage not just your project, but also to balance many different demands and responsibilities and maintaining your well being along the way. This workshop will offer an opportunity to prepare for the emotional journey of your candidature and to build resilience. The focus will be on developing and strengthening strategies to assist you in facing ‘the bumps on the road’ so that you are able to continue to do what is important.  Topics covered in this workshop include self-awareness, values and strengths, managing difficult thoughts and emotions and communicating effectively.
  • Respectful Relationships Workshop for HDR Candidates - 1pm to 3:30pm
This practical, interactive workshop explores issues of gender, relationships and sexuality, consent and ethics in contemporary Australian society, with particular relevance to HDR candidates.  The workshop busts some common myths about sexual harassment and sexual assault – and equips you to set boundaries on your own and other people’s behaviours – as active participants and bystanders.
Note: the session includes discussion of sexual assault, and is designed to be completed by all Higher Degree Research candidates.  If you feel unable to complete this session for personal reasons, please contact a Sexual Misconduct Officer to arrange a confidential exemption.
