Summary of Project

Due to the increasing abundance of underwater digital imagery, the manual identification of individual dwarf minke whales from images and videos has become cost-ineffective. It has become excessively time-consuming to manually check if an unsorted image contains a new whale or a known whale. Considering that photo-identification of dwarf minke whales represents one of the few methods available to address key knowledge gaps for this species’ biology and life history, the application of automated recognition tools can potentially provide new scientific insights that would otherwise be inaccessible to scientists.
