Summary of Project

Mangroves are widely recognised as valuable fish habitats; in particular as nurseries for juveniles of important fisheries species. However, the term mangrove encompasses a range of species growing in a diversity of settings (e.g. estuarine, coastal, island), on a range of sediment types, in areas of differing salinity, and across a broad geographic range with a variety of tidal regimes. This diversity of types and settings provides the potential for substantial differences in the details of functioning and, consequently, substantial differences in the services they provide to fish and so in their value as fish habitats. This project will use cutting-edge, artificial intelligence-enhanced video and sensor studies to compare the use by fish and physical conditions across a range of settings, with the aim of determining how the value of mangroves varies over space and time.
