Summary of Project
Queensland has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. The level of protection from solar UV radiation that causes harm to humans may be expressed as a fraction of the total available solar UV surface radiation under a tree canopy. The objective of this work is to provide a novel, standardised assessment procedure for determining the broad-spectrum ultraviolet protection and shade quality of established trees of species commonly found in Queensland. This research will provide useful information to local government, sporting and educational facilities, town planners, landscapers, and arborists etc about which species provide the most effective natural shade for various locations throughout Queensland.
This project is suitable for Masters, Hons, and Grad Dip students, or those undertaking dissertation subjects within coursework programs such as the MPH program. Students can undertake this research from anywhere in Queensland.
