Bioinformatics: Programming and RNA-Seq Analysis with R

Bioinformatics: Programming and RNA-Seq Analysis with R

This intensive three day workshop will cover a range of topics on programming with R:

  • Day 1 ‘Intro to R’ introduces the fundamentals of the R software environment, a powerful, popular and free statistical and graphical programming language. Participants will learn about the structure of the R language, how to add functionality through packages, and how to process data, generate tables and figures using R.
  • Day 2 ‘Advanced R’
  • Day 3 ‘RNA-Seq using R’ will focus on using R packages to analyse RNA-Seq sequence data
  • All courses are presented by expert instructor Nicholas Matigian from QFAB

The cost of the workshop is $75 for all three days, including lunch. Participants must bring their own laptop as this is a hands-on computational course.

PhD candidates may count 24 hours towards RD7003 Professional Development if they complete all three days of the course.  The course organisers will provide a certificate.

Note that this workshop has some overlap with a longer bioinformatics workshop being held in Townsville on 15-19 July.  Contact the organisers for more details.

Nicholas Matigian is a data analyst (Biostatistician and Bioinformatician). He has 15 years’ experience in analysing high throughput genomic data, including gene expression, methylation, metagenomics, high-throughput mass spectrometry protein profiling and next-generation sequencing data.  For the past two years, Nicholas has provided statistical support to UQDI and other UQ researchers as part of the UQDI Biostatistics Facility.

Dr Matt Field is a senior research fellow in bioinformatics at AITHM in JCU.  He has over two decades’ experience working with big biological datasets, especially high those produced by genomic sequencing technologies. He will assist with the R workshops and is available to answer any general bioinformatics queries.

Dr Ashley Waardenberg is a postdoctoral researcher at AITHM in JCU.  He is based at Cairns and is the resident R expert. He will assist with the R workshops and present on tools he has developed for RNA-Seq analysis.

CairnsMonday 10 July to Wednesday 12 July 20199:00am to 5:00pm every dayRoom details will be provided to registered attendees via email

Please note that this workshop is being organised by JCU’s Centre for Tropical Bioinformatics and Molecular Biology (CTBMB), and will not be placed onto CareerHub for registration.  You will need to register online at
