Enterprise Bargaining

PROGRESS TO DATE: MEETING: (18 & 19 April 2013)

Professor Robyn McGuiggan led the negotiations at a 2 day meeting held in Townsville. Associate Professor Lee Stewart and Mr Les Nicholson were also welcomed to the bargaining team.

Academic Workforce issues

Professor McGuiggan advised meetings for consultation between Senior Executive and Academic Management had been set to progress the issues of Academic Workloads, SSP and Academic Casual conversion.

Hours of Work/Overtime

Further discussion continued on JCU’s claim. The unions declined to consider increasing the existing span of hours from 6.00 am to 9.00 pm for Professional and Technical staff however agreed to consider options such as smaller increase to the span of hours, identifying key areas within JCU or increasing the ordinary hours that may be worked in a day. JCU will consider options and the matter will be revisited at the next meeting.

Managing Ill Health

This clause was agreed in principle with key changes to the requirement to shorten the notice period to attend a medical examination reduced to 1 month and in return the extension to the right for review by Vice-Chancellor increased to 20 working days.

Fixed Term Employment

Issues for discussion centred around the introduction of an additional Fixed Term Use Category i.e. Unanticipated Increase to Enrolments and the ability to end a fixed term appointment early in cases where external funding is withdrawn or for replacement appointments where the substantive incumbent may return early i.e. maternity leave replacement, secondments etc.

Other areas of discussion included Notice Periods on Termination, Modes and Types of Employment, Outside Work and Individual Flexibility Agreements. It is anticipated these clauses will be discussed and agreed in principle at the next meeting.

The next meeting will be held in Townsville on 30 April 2013 and 1 May 2013.
