Summer School

The JCU Summer School for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students is an initiative of the Indigenous Education and Research Centre (IERC). This is an intensive preparation program open to all Indigenous school leavers planning to study in 2024.

The Summer School conducts pre-programs for prospective Indigenous school leavers and non-school leavers who are seeking to gain entry into JCU in 2024. The pre-program is an intensive preparation programs designed to build basic competencies to commence tertiary studies next year.


The 2023 Summer School pre-programs is taught by the Indigenous Education and Research Centre and will focus on building capacities in Math, English, Chemistry and tertiary study skills.


The Summer School is a one-week program and will run from Monday 27th November to Friday 1st December 2023 on the JCU Townsville, Bebegu Yumba Campus. The program is open to school leavers and non-school leavers. Successful applicants travelling from outside the Townsville region have the option to stay at the Saints Residential College on campus and will be fully supervised at all times. JCU staff from the Indigenous Education and Research Centre run the program and supervise academic and recreational activities, with the help of Indigenous Student Ambassadors at JCU. The IERC covers all costs associated with the program, including travel to and from Townsville, accommodation and catering costs for participants.
