JCU's main campuses are located in North Queensland, a remarkable region which features an extraordinary combination of one of the oldest Indigenous cultures, a stunning tropical climate, sustainable environments and a multicultural population.
The region is uniquely different to the rest of Australia, and possibly the world. The UN’s World Heritage Convention agrees. Both the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics rainforests are included on the World Heritage List for their natural values. Nowhere else in the world do two World Heritage regions exist side by side.
Maximise study-life balance
The coastal cities of Cairns and Townsville provide modern sporting, cultural, entertainment and shopping facilities and a relaxed lifestyle.
Northern Queensland makes the perfect base for outdoor recreational activities including rainforest hiking, mountain biking and snorkelling and scuba diving on the reef. Enjoy our famous beaches, where white sand and crystal-clear waters await you. You may even see some of our unique native Australian animals!
Have fun and get ready for an adventure – all at JCU.
Explore the region
Just west of Cairns lies the agriculturally rich Atherton Tablelands and to the northwest the Gulf Savannah region with its fringing mountain ranges and wide-open spaces. Cape York Peninsula occupies Queensland’s most northern corner and has enormous environmental diversity of great interest to scientists and visitors alike. Further north are the beautiful Torres Strait Islands, which have a unique history and fascinating Indigenous culture.
