Nicole Cubba (USA)

1. Why did you choose to study at James Cook University?

Growing up in Michigan in the USA, I was fortunate to travel to Florida as a child and my parents did a really good job of immersing me in different things like the ocean. I had so many wonderful experiences with the ocean, which motivated me to pursue a career in marine biology.

I elected to study at JCU for several reasons. The Master of Marine Biology program is ranked highly across the globe, and it looked like a great place to complete my master’s. I originally planned to start studying in July 2021, but I had to defer a semester. I’d never been to Australia before moving here for study, so it was a massive risk, but I’ve been very impressed so far.

2. What has been the highlight of your study experience at James Cook University so far?

I’ve only been here six weeks and it’s been incredible. It’s a beautiful country and Townsville has been a welcoming place. I came from a state school in Michigan in the U.S.A so there were no marine biology subjects. I really love JCU so far, the classes are cool and I’m learning everything that I am interested in.

3. What are your career goals?

I’m really interested in conservation, specifically pelagic sharks, and fish. Once I graduate from JCU, I would love to go into conversation work in the USA, either working for the government or for an N.G.O.

4. What piece of advice would you like to share with any international students considering James Cook University?

I would say to be open to making friends in the first week. I’ve already met some of the coolest people just by being open and being willing to talk to anyone and everyone. Keep your mind open and say yes to things because they could lead you to new experiences.
