JCU has two main study periods each year: Study Period 1 (February-June) and Study Period 2 (July-November) which are each 13 weeks long. Study abroad and exchange students should avoid selecting subjects that run before the start of their chosen study period as it could create visa issues.
JCU has three main trimesters each year: Trimester 1 (February-May), Trimester 2 (May-August) and Trimester 3 (September-December) which are each 10 weeks long. To meet visa requirements, study abroad and exchange students should avoid selecting subjects that run before the start of their chosen trimesters.
Undergraduate and Postgraduate Business, Commerce, Tourism and Information Technology Courses are in the Trimester Model. See the Trimester FAQ page for the most up-to-date list of courses.
Study Abroad/ Exchange students cannot study subjects from both trimester and study period models, only one or the other. You must choose all trimester subjects, or all study period (semester) subjects.
At JCU most individual subjects have a value of 3 credit points. A normal full-time study load for a study period is four subjects or 12 credit points. The minimum allowable enrolment for study abroad/exchange students at JCU is three subjects or 9 credit points, and you must have permission from your home institution for this option.
It is your responsibility to ensure that the subjects you wish to study at JCU are eligible for credit at your home institution.
Study Abroad/Exchange students cannot study subjects from both trimester and study period models, only one or the other. You must choose all trimester subjects, or all study period (semester) subjects.
You can study Level 1, 2 or 3 subjects if you meet the required subject prerequisites (if applicable).
When you apply you should list between six to eight subjects (one semester) or 12 subjects (two semesters), and ensure the subjects are available in the Study Period you prefer (Study Period 1 or Study Period 2) and at the campus you are applying for.
Study Abroad/Exchange students cannot study subjects from both trimester and study period models, only one or the other. You must choose all trimester subjects, or all study period (semester) subjects.
Postgraduate students can enrol in both undergraduate (Levels 1–4) and postgraduate (Level 5) subjects. It is your responsibility to ensure that subjects studied at JCU, either undergraduate or postgraduate, are approved by your home university for credit towards your degree program.
As a postgraduate student you must enrol in at least one Level 5 subject during your Study Abroad or exchange semester and meet the required subject prerequisites (if applicable).
When you apply you should list between six to eight subjects (one semester) or 12 subjects (two semesters)*, and ensure the subjects are available in the Study Period you prefer (Study Period 1 or Study Period 2) and at the campus you are applying for.
*Exchange students only
Some subjects are available outside the main study periods and are offered by intensive mode. These are usually available in the mid-year break or before the start of the main study year. Many subjects with longer field-trip components are offered in intensive mode.
You should avoid selecting subjects that run before the start of your chosen study period as this could create visa issues.
Please note that the subjects below are not available to Study Abroad/Exchange students:
- Honours subjects and Postgraduate level (Level 4 and 5, except in Law and Engineering). (Undergraduate Study Abroad/Exchange students only).
- Some External mode subjects (US Financial Aid students should check if subject choices will affect funding options)
- Intensive subjects with inappropriate dates (check subject face-to-face teaching dates on Subject Search)
- Any MD, DS, ML, PC, PS, RH, TV subjects.
Some subjects are only available to students completing their full degree at JCU or graduate students. If you are unsure, you can select the subject and we will check your eligibility.
You will be advised in your Offer Letter if the subjects you have applied for have been approved.
Our handy study area guides outline the available subjects in each study area by semesters and trimesters.
